A cinematic moment in an ordinary life
Last year I received an email asking if I’d be interested in illustrating a quote book by Nora Ephron.
I had to read the email twice.
The project was Someday This Will Be a Funny Story: The Quotable Nora Ephron, published by Penguin Random House, and they were looking for someone to create the cover and interior illustrations.
I said yes immediately… and then began sweating as imposter syndrome crept in. I shrugged it off by channeling my inner Amy Poehler who I remember reading an article about. Whenever she feels self doubt, this wonderful woman recognizes her wonderfulness by telling herself "I take great pride in my work." And that's me! And maybe that's Nora Ephron too. I felt like I had big shoes to fill to meet Nora Ephron level standards.
Now that the book released today, March 10th, I can finally share it!
Nora Ephron’s writing and movies are a part of my DNA. She has always had this rare mix of wit, honesty and sharp observation about life. Getting the opportunity to illustrate a book celebrating her words was both surreal and deeply meaningful to me.
My goal with the artwork was to create illustrations that felt like a quiet visual companion to her voice - expressive, thoughtful and a little playful.
Seeing the finished book for the first time was one of those moments where you stop and think: I can’t believe I get to do this.
Working with Penguin Random House
Working with people at the iconic Penguin Random House was amazing. Like every moment the hypothetical became permanent. Everyone from the Design Director to the layout department, made the entire process fun, supportive and collaborative.
This project is a huge milestone for me and I’m incredibly proud to have been part of it.
